Journey to lure elephants home in Yunnan, China

16 months ago, a herd of 14 wild elephants left home for a food tour across fertile farmland filled with corn, sugarcane, bananas and dragonfruit in China's Yunnan province.

Many people rejoiced to see the elephants marching through the city streets, pouring grain, and sleeping all at once in the fields. However, elephants can weigh up to 4 tons and many can run at very high speeds.

So it's a daunting task for the 34 Yunnan Forest Firefighters tasked with getting the elephants home safely. At night, the elephants disappear into the dense forest, allowing you to trek up to 30 kilometers (18 miles) in a day.

As the elephants moved closer to the local capital, Kunming, forest firefighters used drones to monitor the elephants and spend time sleeping in their vehicles. When they approach a village, loudspeakers and door-to-door checks urge locals to shut themselves in, preferably upstairs, out of reach of the hungry visitors.

The elephants have already traveled more than 700 kilometers and are now heading home, but it turns out that they still have hundreds of kilometers to go. When the fresh autumn comes soon, the elephants are expected to return home quickly. The elephants tracking teams said that have been chasing the elephants for the past hour were very happy, although it was a laborious and challenging time.
