#World Elephant Day# For both elephants and humans, they each need their own safe habitat

A man was trampled and killed by an elephant outside a forest reserve in northeastern India. With a population of about 1.93.4 billion, India is the second-most populous country in the world. However, with the population increase, people have expanded the range of human activity to nature. Hence, the number of populations and the number of habitats of animals, including elephants are inversely proportional.

India is home to the world's largest population of endangered Asian elephants. However, the elephant's habitat is rapidly declining in India. And the state of Assam, where the incident took place, is the state with the second-largest wild elephant population in India.

Earlier this week, the death of a man trampled by an elephant in the state of Assam was quickly made headlines on Twitter by Indian Forest Service official Parveen Kaswan. He posted on Twitter a video of elephants crossing the road in a herd.

The video posted by Parveen Kaswan was filmed by police at 5 pm on July 25, showing a herd of elephants crossing a national road outside the forest reserve, converging on both sides of the road. Loud horns are constantly heard, and people wave cloths at the elephants. And the last elephant in the herd to cross the road suddenly breaks out of the herd and chases a man into a corner and steps on him several times. And unfortunately, the man was killed by an elephant.

India considers elephants a national heritage animal, and elephants are protected under strict wildlife laws. However, as time goes by, the conflict between animals and humans escalates, and what if human casualties continue to occur? According to information from the Environment Minister, more than 2,300 Indians were killed by elephants between 2014 and 2019. We must not cause any further damage.

Elephants and humans must indeed coexist. But it is for each other to live, at least in their habitat, for both humans and elephants. Humans must protect the elephant's habitat, and if the elephant's habitat is guaranteed, further human casualties will not quickly occur. A solution to the conflict between elephants and humans is needed as soon as possible.
