Poaching of rhinos and elephants has dropped significantly this year in Namibia, government data showed on Monday. According to statistics from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the number of illegally killed elephants has finally reached its lowest level in five years.

Elephant poaching peaked at 101 cases in 2016 but has been on a downward trend so far. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said the decline in poaching was due to cooperation between law enforcement agencies and public participation.

However, in December of last year, Namibia suffered economic hardship due to the severe drought problem along with the Corona 19 problem. Many international communities oppose the elephant trade, which is classified as an endangered species, but Namibia's Ministry of Environment said, "The number of elephants here has increased by over 1500 in one year, so it has escaped extinction."

It should be noted that the problem of elephant extinction is not unique to Namibia. Elephants throughout Africa are considered endangered due to poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and ecological factors. It is a time when appropriate international regulations for elephants and other endangered animals are needed, and continuous protection and management of elephants is required.
