FaithInvest is an international network of charitable funds that helps faith-based groups invest in ways that align with their values. At present, the network has established a cooperative relationship with the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) International Department.

The project has been supported by several organizations and is currently working with the UK government on the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) to advance the decade of action to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Recently, the representative of the International Department was commissioned to provide Chinese translation for the basic introduction of its official website. To promote China's deep participation in global environmental governance, CBCGDF International Department now publishes bilingual content for readers' reference.

What are the Faith Plans?

The Faith Plans are commitments by the major faiths of the world to develop a set of measurable, real world initiatives driving action on key issues including climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development. They involve each religious group planning how they will manage their assets and resources over the next seven to ten years – from their investments, schools, hospitals and youth organisations to their land, purchasing power, influence and advocacy. The Plans will focus on seven Key Areas:

More than 1000 religious groups covering all faith traditions are expected to take part in the programme, which aims to mobilise the vast potential of religious organisations -– the biggest organised sector of civil society – to make a significant contribution to the climate crisis, the post-Covid regeneration and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The programme builds upon the success and experiences of the original Faith Commitments programme inaugurated by the UN and the Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC) in 2008. This culminated in the 2009 launch of 30 Plans at Windsor Castle in the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh (founder of ARC), followed by another 32 plans launched in 2012.

The new Faith Plans Programme is a joint initiative of FaithInvest and WWF’s Beliefs and Values Programme; an exciting programme designed by faiths for faiths. The programme aims to enable faith groups to create their own long-term plans for the decade of Action on the SDGs (up to 10 years) allowing them to mainstream their environmental and sustainability activities across all of their operations, including their investments. Groups will have the opportunity to create a framework for faith motivated environmental sustainability projects, and have access to expert resources, knowledge, and technical skills. The project also aims to create a showcase of the scope and scale of faith environmental and sustainability activities and thus help raise ambition amongst governments and multilateral structures at key international moments such as COP26 and Stockholm +50.

The Faith Plans Website

Access to resources and knowledge will be possible through the new Faith Plans website (faithplans.org). The website will not only support groups creating Faith Plans through technical documents and guides, but also act as a platform for sharing stories, experiences, and success. Among the website pages, groups will be able to dive into each Key Area of the plans and discover what has already taken place within faith and environmental work. News and stories will be updated regularly to give a wide range of current and relevant examples.

Never has there been a more exciting opportunity to come together as the faiths of the world to work together in striving for change to be made. By committing to create a Faith Plan, faith groups will join what is now the largest mobilisation of the faith on environmental action in history.
