ZHOU Jinfeng: Biodiversity is the starting point and endpoint of studying ecological civilization | opinion

On August 15, 2005, Comrade Xi Jinping, then secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, creatively put forward the important development concept of "green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains" in Yucun, Anji, Zhejiang, which is having a broad and far-reaching impact on the construction of my country's ecological civilization.

Zhou Jinfeng believes that green water and green mountains are the embodiment of biodiversity. To understand biodiversity, we should prioritize biodiversity protection and give a second priority to production development. Biodiversity is the starting point and foothold of ecological civilization research and a problem to be solved in ecological civilization construction.

What's biodiversity?

Biodiversity (biodiversity / biological diversity), 《Conservation Biology》, Jiang Zhigang et al. (1997) defined biodiversity as: "Biodiversity is an ecological complex formed by organisms and their environment. The integration of various ecological processes related to animals, plants, microorganisms and their genes, as well as their living environments." Biodiversity usually includes three components: genetic (gene) diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity.

ZHOU Jinfeng said:

Building at to destroy its biodiversity, including genes, species, and ecosystems. Whether it is building a beautiful bay or a demonstration of ecological civilization, it is necessary to figure out the biodiversity in the region and not just confine or focus on the construction of modern industrial civilization.

To construct an ecological civilization, we should conduct background investigations of all animals, plants, and microorganisms in the area, understand biodiversity and stand at the commanding heights of protecting the environment. Only in this way can we not violate the principle of ecology. Ecological civilization construction can promote a new pattern of modernization in which man and nature develop harmoniously.

The fundamental of ecological civilization is biodiversity, rather than those indicators such as BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and other indicators established by today's industrial civilization. As for the methodology for the investigation, evaluation and restoration of the ecological environment, I suggest that everyone refer to the series of standards for biodiversity, including the standards of investigation, monitoring, evaluation, restoration, adaptation, and compensation. To build an ecological civilization, we must understand the background of biodiversity, consciously cherish and protect nature, and more actively protect the ecological environment.

However, today we are engaged in urban development planning, marine development planning, and coastline development planning. Basically, there are huge problems and serious mistakes. What we considered is how to develop and utilize on a large scale, but ignored the most essential problem——the idea of building an ecological civilization-respecting nature, conforming to nature, and protecting nature. " Zhou Jinfeng emphasized, "Human and nature are the community of life. We pay attention to animals, plants, and microorganisms, as well as their natural state and changes. The starting point is to protect biodiversity, and the goal is to ensure the balance, stability and sustainability of the ecosystem. So that we can build a beautiful China and strive to enter a new era of socialist ecological civilization.

For example, the coastline planning. We need to know about mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. They are collectively referred to as the "three typical marine ecosystems". They have a solid functional relationship, interdependence, symbiosis, and joint protection of the coastline. Jinfeng Zhou suggested, "If you want to make a good coastline plan, you must investigate and evaluate the ecological environment of the coastal zone. All three elements are indispensable. But it does not mean that other species are not important. We also need to pay attention to other species. It's too ridiculous to only consider the key species, for example, mangroves, which against the concept of ecological civilization construction. "Jinfeng Zhou hopes, "People in the work of ecological civilization construction projects must continue to strengthen the work on biodiversity, protect biodiversity, and protect the ecological environment. We will surely see the sky blue, green ground, and clean water."
