ZHOU Jinfeng: Biodiversity Conservation in our Neighborhood could be the key to dealing with Human-Elephant Conflict

The newest incidence of elephants migrating north has sparked worldwide interest.

'I don't believe that returning them to their natural habitats is the greatest option,' Mr. Zhou said in an interview. Because the current habitat is neither big nor good enough, the elephants are looking for a new habitat, at least a temporary one.

He suggested building a new national park for elephants, not in the original sense of a national park, but instead, a corridor to preserve "Biodiversity Conservation in our Neighborhood", also known as BCON innovative approach, addresses the intersection of elephant space and human life and the possible human-elephant conflict. In this way, biodiversity conservation should be appropriately extended from the core national protected areas to the surrounding areas.

Biodiversity Conservation in our Neighborhood aims to promote effective conservation of biodiversity in areas where human activities are intensive, balance conservation and development, and synergize sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity conservation. Traditional conservation of biodiversity is mainly carried out in deep mountains, natural wilds and nature reserves. Although this kind of landscape conservation is also very important, yet the current efforts are far from enough to reverse the global trend of rapid biodiversity loss. Conservation of biodiversity requires innovative thinking. Due to the expansion of the human living area, it is of great importance to learn how to carry out biodiversity conservation in populated areas effectively.

Here's a question we should ask ourselves.

The number of Asian elephants has doubled in the past 50 years. With enough habitat, if they double again in the next 50 years, are we ready for that?

We need to innovate nature conservation methods and promote the ecological civilization background of "harmony between man and nature" through Biodiversity Conservation in our Neighborhood (BCON).
