Yangtze finless porpoise is an aquatic mammal that is similar to dolphins in appearance. It is one of the rarest freshwater whale species in the world. Yangtze finless porpoise is also known as "smiling angel" for its mischievous grin and is extremely important in Yangtze River ecosystem protection. Due to high-level human activities in years, Yangtze finless porpoise is critically endangered with a population of around 1,000. It is classified as China's first-class protected animal.

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs plans to carry out the largest scale of ex-situ conservation in history for Yangtze finless porpoise and has raised widespread concern among the public. On May 19, 2021, we wrote a letter to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, explaining that it is unnecessary to carry out ex-situ conservation because the ecological condition of Yangtze River is getting better with the implementation of Yangtze River Protection Law. On June 1, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs invited CBCGDF to attend the Yangtze finless porpoise protection meeting. CBCGDF will follow up on this matter and continue to make efforts to protect this species.
