29 August, 2018-The Secretary-General Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng delivered a speech on the 5th Cross Straits, Hong Kong and Macao Philanthropy Symposium, aiming to promote the exchange between charities. With the theme of “China’s New Charity, Charity’s New Efforts”(中华新慈善 慈善新作为), the symposium carried out topics like how to develop a better way to push forward China’s Charity, how to pass on the family charity career to the next generation and the ecological protection and NGOs, widely discussed by representatives from well-known Charities in the symposium.

In Dr. Zhou’s Speech, he shared 5 stories to show how environmental NGOs protect the ecosystem in an innovative way.

First is the establishment of the Blufin Tuna Day.

It all started from a popular TV show, which encouraged the delicacy of Blufin Tuna, a critically endangered species listed in IUCN Red List. 80% of Bluefin Tuna market was Japanese. However, JD.com, one of the leading e-commerce platforms started to sell Bluefin Tuna. With the large Chinese market joining in Bluefin Tuna consumption, they will disappear by no time.

For this account, CBCGDF, with the support of volunteers, asked JD.com to withdraw the decision and stop selling them. The second day, JD.com got all Blufin Tuna off shelves. To appreciate the prompt response, we set that day as the Blufin Tuna Day.

Afterwards, CBCGDF started to search the online selling platforms and whenever there were enterprises, media encouraging consuming Blufin Tuna, CBCGDF showed them the former case and carry out the same strategy. By closely contacting the e-commerce platform, the public and the businesses understand better about biodiversity conservation and the status of Blufin Tuna.

This Summer, CBCGDF also shared the story to a primary school, to let them know Bluefin Tuna are more endangered than pandas and thus urgent action should be taken.
