On June 28th, 2023, the Third Session of the 14th the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPCSC) decided to set August 15th as the National Ecological Day of China. China carries out publicity and education activities on ecological civilization through various forms. As the first festival with the theme of ecology in China, the proposal of setting a “National Ecological Day” is symbolic and unique, which shows that “ecology” has received more and more attention at the national and social levels; besides, carrying out publicity and education activities on ecological civilization in various forms also reflects the comprehensive and diversified practical achievements of ecological civilization construction in China. Why is the “National Ecological Day” set on August 15th? And what is the far-reaching significance of its establishment? Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), recently has been interviewed by Southern Plus to share his opinions about these questions.

As he explained, the date of August 15th is when the notion of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” was put forward back in 2005, reflecting on the development transformation of Anji County, Zhejiang Province. “Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the notion has played a very positive role in all kinds of work. It is very important to establish the day of proposal as the National Ecological Day and further promote the notion,” said Dr. Zhou.

Dr. Zhou regarded the notion as a great innovation in the worldview and methodology. “The old view of the world is to conquer the universe and transform the world. Through the development since the reform and opening up, our view of the world has changed to the harmonious coexistence between man and nature. We should protect lucid waters and lush mountains. To protect productivity is to develop productivity.”

The establishment of the National Ecological Day, as he believed, is not only of great significance to China, but also plays a leading role in global ecological civilization construction. “Now, the Earth and mankind have entered an era of rapid change and crisis. In the face of great challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate crisis and public health crisis, the fundamental solution is to put the notion into practice, which has substantial international significance.”
