Erik Solheim started a global initiative,  "the End Plastic Pollution", to address the issue of plastic pollution. This initiative aims to raise public awareness of plastic pollution worldwide and encourage governments to take action to reduce plastic pollution and achieve sustainable development.

Recognizing the grave threats posed by plastic pollution to the environment, wildlife, and human health, Solheim pointed out that addressing this issue requires global cooperation and action. He launched a series of initiatives and activities to increase people's understanding of plastic pollution and inspire governments, businesses, and individuals to take measures to reduce, reuse and recycle the plastics.

Solheim's initiative has achieved remarkable results and made a significant impact. During his term of duty as the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), he spearheaded the development and implementation of the "Global Plastic Action Partnership," which has garnered widespread support and participation globally. This partnership aims to reduce plastic pollution and marine plastic debris by transforming plastic production and consumption patterns.

Furthermore, Solheim actively participated in various international conferences and forums, advocating for the establishment of international cooperation mechanisms to strengthen collaboration among nations in addressing plastic pollution. He called for an intergovernmental negotiations for a legally binding international agreement to control the global plastic pollution.
