He pointed out that China has made a lot of efforts in reducing accidental capture of protected species and protecting marine life, which have been embodied in the following three aspects: 1) the formulation of fishing net specifications and standards; 2) a strict legal supporting system; 3) the setting of closed fishing periods and closed fishing areas.
In terms of ecological development and species protection of marine fishery, China and Pakistan have huge potential for cooperation. Dr. Zhou held the opinion that both countries should make good use of each other’s strengths. China has outstanding marine fishery technologies and better facilities such as refrigerated ships, and the additional industries of marine fishery are thriving in China, while Pakistan is rich in marine and fresh water resources, especially cold water resources, which is suitable for the development of cold water culture.
As for the reform of fishing methods for Pakistani fishermen, Dr. Zhou put forward three suggestions: 1) government departments should increase their financial support; 2) international organizations should offer to help; 3) publicity and education for the public should include education targeted at fishermen and children.
