Pakistan is the fifth most populous country in the world and emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gases, but it is one of the countries most vulnerable to extreme weather caused by global warming. Since June 2022, Pakistan has experienced one of the most destructive climate disasters in history. Although the floods have receded, post-disaster reconstruction and future defense still need global cooperation.

In order to help Pakistani people rebuild their homes, improve their ability to enhance climate resilience through global cooperation, promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, and deepen China-Pakistan friendship, on January 16, 2023, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and Pakistani Embassy in China jointly held the online launching ceremony of the series of charity activities called "Climate and Culture: Co-creating an Ecological Civilization and Sharing a Bright Future". The event was co-organized by UNHCR Representative Office in China, China Poetry Development Foundation, SCO National Youth Platform, ect., which will gather loving forces across the society and call for global climate cooperation to support Pakistan.

His Excellency Moin Ul Haque, Pakistani Ambassador to China, said that last year, many places in Pakistan suffered from unprecedented severe floods, which affected more than 33 million people and caused economic losses of more than 30 billion US dollars. The solidarity and cooperation of the international community has provided Pakistan with great help and support. At this hard time, China has always been a strong supporter and partner of the Pakistani people. China is one of the countries that have assisted the most since the floods in Pakistan. We are very grateful and thank the whole of China for being with the Pakistani people. Launching this activity today, I hope that friends from all sectors in China will join hands again to help the people in Pakistan who suffered from the floods. I wish the event a complete success!

Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of CBCGDF, said in his opening speech that the climate disasters in Pakistan in 2022 and even the extreme climate disasters in the next few years are directly caused by the climate crisis. In the past 200 years, the development model of human industrial civilization has caused global warming, which eventually caused many disasters including the floods in Pakistan. Everyone has an obligation and responsibility to jointly alleviate and solve disasters. We help Pakistan to rebuild after the disaster, so that its soil and environment can be restored. This is also the reconstruction of our human habitat, and we help ourselves to rebuild the resilience of the earth. This is our joint efforts to achieve the new goals of climate change, double carbon and biodiversity. Let us join hands to build a community of life on earth and a community of shared future for mankind.

Vanno Noupech, the UN Refuge Agency (UNHCR)Representative in China, said it was great to see different participants coming together to support Pakistan's humanitarian and development efforts, which are crucial to addressing the climate challenge. We are grateful for the generosity of Pakistan as a host country for refugees for four decades. In 2022, Pakistan was hit by catastrophic floods. UNHCR quickly responded to government-led emergency measures and provided core relief items, cash assistance, and support for post-disaster reconstruction. We also focused on clean energy and building the climate resilience of local communities. We hope to join hands with you to create more opportunities, build synergy for climate action and green development, and support people in Pakistan.
