The host asked about Mr. Wang Luhai’s opinion on plastic pollution control and biodiversity conservation as a warm-hearted citizen of Beijing.

Mr. Wang said: “My concern is that a waste incineration plant will be built near my home. There are many residents around, so I am very concerned about the impact of waste incineration on people's health.

We know that yellow and green smoke will appear when plastic burns, and there will be a pungent odor, so I think the plastic in waste incineration is a source of toxicity.

I also saw some relevant materials which indicates that in waste incineration project near my home, rubber and plastic are classified into one category accounting for 26.4% ~ 36% of the total waste. If 850,000 tons of garbage were burned a year, it means about 255,000 tons of plastic would be burnt, which would cause great harm. I am not a professional environmental protection expert; I just think about this issue from the perspective of ordinary people. The chlorine element inside the plastic will participate in the chemical reaction of incineration. So far, I have not seen a more authoritative and detailed analysis of what kind of compound these chlorine elements are finally discharged to the air. I also did some information search that shows the products of plastic waste such as dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hydrogen chloride gas are substances harmful to human body and will also bring damage to the ecology.”
