Yesterday (March 2, 2022) was the 50th anniversary of the publication of the report (the limits of growth). The International Department of China Bioderversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a letter from Jorgen Randers, who is one of the international top climate strategy scholars, international work advisor to the CBCDGF , the honorary professor of BI Norwegian Business School and the co-founder of the China Committee of the club of Rome, sharing his signed article (Living within the limits) published in China Daily.
The landmark report of the Club of Rome, the limits to growth, was published on March 2, 1972, which sounded an alarm for all humanity. The limits of growth was co-authored by Donella H. Meadows, Dennis L. Meadows and Jorgen Randers who is the international work consultant of the CBCDGF.
This report, published in 1972, warned that the Earth’s resources would not be able to support the exponential growth of economy and population, and would collapse before the end of this century. Today, 50 years later, generally speaking, the world has followed the scenario predicted in the report. What is most likely to happen in the next 50 years? Most likely, the global overreaction to the climate change will continue to be weak. In developed countries, it will be due to the slow decline of material welfare and the intensification of inequality. In developing countries, this will be due to lack of economic progress and persistent poverty. In China, tensions may be the weakest, because the people are enjoying the benefits of the China’s sustained economic growth.
