Recently, the villagers from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southwest of China reported to CBCGDF that since five hundreds-year-old trees were killed in 2007 for the construction of expressways, two more ancient trees were cut off branches this spring. These trees are species under second-grade state protection --beech trees.

A local villager, identified by his family name as Jiang, introduced that from 2017, the construction of the roadbed, road surface, toll station severely damaged the agricultural infrastructures and the commute road. Furthermore, the villagers were outraged because the five hundreds-year-old beech trees planted on both sides of the road died without any protective measures during the construction process.

"The five old trees, with the age of more than hundreds of years, were directly dug up or even buried to death", Jiang said in sore distress. He was not the only heartbroken person. These five old trees standing there were believed to create good Feng Shui – an ancient Chinese system that relies on astronomical and geographical laws to help channel positive energy to create harmony to people and the surroundings. Now that they are dead, it is very deplorable for all the villagers.

Old trees usually refer to trees with a history of more than one hundred years; valuable trees generally refer to trees that are precious, rare or with historical value. Old and valuable trees are important national or local treasures. At present, almost all provinces in China have introduced the corresponding local management of old and valuable trees. However, these old trees in Leye County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, were roughly cut branches, improper disposed or even directly dug up. Regardless of whether these acts are illegal and what punishment the perpetrator should be given, it is worrying to see the local authorities’ little awareness of protecting trees.
