The outstanding youth representative of the Youth Leadership Fund of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has now arrive in Madrid, Spain, the hosting spot of UNFCCC CoP25.

On the afternoon of December 9, local time, CBCGDF representative attended a side event on climate action in the fashion industry, which belongs to the CoP25 “Global Climate Action event”. The theme of the side event was "Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action: One year after its launch"

The Fashion Industry Charter for Climate, an industry led and driven initiative, is guided by its mission to “drive the fashion industry to net-zero Greenhouse Gas Missions no later than 2050 in line with keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees”. This event highlighted the role of the private sector in playing its part to fulfill the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Under the auspices of UN Climate Change, fashion stakeholders worked during 2018 to identify ways in which the broader textile, clothing and fashion industry can move towards a holistic commitment to climate action. The created the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action which contains the vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The Fashion Industry Charter was launched at COP24 in Katowice, Poland, in December 2018.

The Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, with its Working Groups, will identify and amplify best practices, strengthen existing efforts, identify and address gaps, facilitate and strengthen collaboration among relevant stakeholders, and join resources and share tools to enable the sector to achieve its climate targets.

The industry charter specifies the following overarching areas of work to be further developed by specific Working Groups:

· Decarbonization pathway and GHG emission reductions

· Raw material

· Manufacturing/Energy

· Logistics

· Policy engagement

· Leveraging existing tools and initiatives

· Promoting broader climate action

CBCGDF representative was very impressed that at this side event, there were people in the clothing and fashion brands industry who answered “how to improve the Charter” and said: “Access to renewable energy is very important, and we have been working hard to develop this field.” Coincidentally, all industries in the world are now striving to save energy and reduce emissions and take climate action. CBCGDF representative also heard that Formula 1 has announced that it will achieve a net carbon footprint of 2030.
