As a Member of GGBN, CBCGDF Been Shared with International Colleagues on Important Progress in World Genetic Diversity Research

In June 2019, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a letter from the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN) sharing an international development in genetic diversity.

The “biodiversity conservation” of CBCGDF is the protection of the ecological complex formed by organisms (animals, plants, microbes) and the environment, and the sum of various ecological processes related to it, including the three levels of ecosystems, species and genes. As an NGO at the forefront of eco-environmental and sustainable development, since 2017, CBCGDF has become increasingly robust in the field of genetic diversity for conservation and research.

In July 2017, CBCGDF representative was invited to participate in "The Global Genome Biodiversity Network Workshop on Linking DNA and Tissue Collections in Asia" hosted by GGBN, the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) and the China National GeneBank (CNGB) and did a keynote sharing.

In August 2017, CBCGDF officially joined GGBN as its 65th member, and GGBN announced the news on its official homepage. Since then, CBCGDF has leveraged GGBN as an international platform to actively participate in genome-related research, including the collection, processing and preservation of genetic tissue samples.

In early 2018, CBCGDF signed a memorandum with CNGB to work together on genetic conservation. In March 2018, GBSN's backbone, the Smithsonian Institution, visited CBCGDF and exchanged views with Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF on issues of common interest in the conservation of genetics and endangered wild species, ecosystems and human interactions, and explored opportunities for cooperation.

GGBN is a global consortium of organizations supporting the collection, maintenance and sharing of research-quality genomic specimens. It is an international network of leading academic research institutions in the world. It is a bold scientific and fundamental effort for the Global Genome Initiative (GGI), and it has a total of more than 3.6 million data records online.

The GGBN Meeting is the main decision-making body representing GGBN members. CNGB and BGI attended the GGBN 2018 Meeting in Vienna, Austria.

The GGBN 2020, the 4th Conference of the Global Genome Biodiversity Network, will take place in Shenzhen China, May 11-15, hosted by CNGB (See details: https://wiki.ggbn.org/ggbn/News#23_May_2019_GGBN_2020_Conference_May_11-15).

GGBN mentioned in detail in this letter, the University of California, CALeDNA Program has joined GGBN. As part of the GGBN-GGI 2019 awards program, the project will develop pipelines for e-DNA collections to GGBN and GBIF, acting as a prototype model for other e-DNA collections and will work with GGBN to demonstrate best practices for e-DNA curation. Approximately 1,000 soil, sediment and water samples representing 18,000 species will be added to GGBN.
