Today (May 22) is the 26th International Day for Biological Diversity. The topic of this year is “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health”. In order to promote biodiversity, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment hosts an event in Nanchang, Jiangxi. The minister Li Ganjie and the vice minister Huang Runqiu delivered the opening speeches. Dr. Christiana Pasca Palmer, SG of Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) sent a video message to express her congratulation to this event.

More than 260 representatives, from China National Committee for Biodiversity Conservation, ecological and environmental departments, social organizations, scientific research institutions, enterprises, and the media, participate in the event.

Biological diversity refers to all organisms living in their natural environment. It has three levels: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecological system diversity. China is abundant in biodiversity: it has over 36 thousand high plant species (ranks the third place around the world), 28 thousand marine vertebral animal species, 1339 crop species, and 576 domesticated animal species. But as the same the global diversity, Chinese biodiversity is faced with great challenges. For instance, 3700 high plant species and 932 vertebral species in China have been added into the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, respectively accounting for 10.9% and 21.4% of the total. It is showed that wild rice could be found at 1320 places in China in 2000, but this number slumped to 325 in 2015.

Ecological civilization has evolved into a national focus. The government values biodiversity conservation and set up the China National Committee for Biodiversity conservation in2011. The prime minister Li Keqiang has stressed that to conserve biodiversity is the main task and important component of environmental protection and sustainable development. China has convened meetings of the China National Committee for Biodiversity Conservation to further protect biological diversity respectively in 2012, 2014, and 2019. China will host the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) in Kunming, Yunnan in 2020, at which Aichi Biodiversity Targets will be reviewed and post-2020 global biodiversity framework will be formulated then.

Since its founding in 1985, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has actively promoted biodiversity conservation. CBCGDF has set up 117 Community Conservation Areas (CCAfa), filed several influential environmental public interest litigations, and promoted endangered wild animal protection, bearing biodiversity conservation in mind. In the event of “International Day for Biological Diversity” on May 22, CBCGDF will join hands with other social organizations and enterprises to sign the Declaration of China Business and Biodiversity Partnership

Li Ganjie, Minister of Ecology and Environment has summarized the Chinese government's efforts in biodiversity conservation in his speech. He mentioned that land protected area has reached to 170 square kilometers, accounting for 18% of the state land area. China has realized 17% goals of Timeline to 2020 proposed by CBD, and adhered to the ecological redline policy, which further helps to improve the living condition of endangered animals, like pandas and Asian elephants. He said that biodiversity conservation is the common duty of government, enterprises, and the public, encouraging more people to engage in this career and contribute to biodiversity protection.
