Recently, CBCGDF held a second working meeting with the National Forestry and Grassland Administration to discuss the positive development of related work. In order to establish a comprehensive species genome of pangolins and provide a theoretical basis for scientific and rational protection work, CBCGDF issued a special application letter to the Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office of the People’s Republic of China. The full text of the application is now published as follows.

Letter on the Application of Pangolin Scales and Their Products to the Malaysian National Wildlife Identification Laboratory for Scientific Research

The Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office of the People’s Republic of China,

China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation as a national first-level society, dedicated to the protection and research of biodiversity, always maintain close communication and cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutions and well-known scientists in the field of pangolin protection and research. In addition to inviting scientists who have achieved outstanding achievements to join in the Pangolin Working Group of CBCGDF on pangolin protection, rescue, and genetic research, the CBCGDF expert committee also has an authoritative research team of more than ten academicians and nearly one hundred experts.

On January 30, 2019, CBCGDF and the Department for Wildlife and Forest Plants Protection, as well as forestry departments from nine provinces including Yunnan and Guangxi, held a working seminar on the protection of pangolins, source identification, and information disclosure. And reached a preliminary consensus on the relevant work. The Department for Wildlife and Forest Plants of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration expressed support for CBCGDF’s research work on pangolins and agreed that CBCGDF should apply to domestic ambulance agencies for samples of scales and skin tissues that are naturally shed by pangolins for scientific research.

In order to carry out related work, further protect the mammals that suffer the most from being threatened in the world, establish a comprehensive species genome of pangolins, and provide a theoretical basis for the scientific protection work, now, due to the needs of scientific research, apply to your Office for permission, that CBCGDF sends samples of pangolin scales and other materials to the Malaysian Wildlife Identification Laboratory to help with genetic testing and preliminary analysis of the data. The relevant fees will be borne by CBCGDF.
