A cutting bluefin tuna showcase was carried out at a restaurant in Beijing on July 27th. CBCGDF’s volunteer went to secretly visit the scene. Surrounded by crowd of bystanders, the 50-kilograms fish was cut into pieces in half an hour.

Some kids were among the audiences as well, accompanied by their parents. Could be overheard that the adults were educating their kids common knowledge on marine life, without knowing another fact that bluefin tuna is a critically endangered species and is already on the edge of extinction.

Someone in the audience asked: "Is it illegal to eat bluefin tuna?" A young voice whispered: “I don't know”. Other than that, others used silence to say they don’t know or they don’t care.

Consuming luxury food on some standard is a symbol of social status in big Chinese cities. Eating pangolins is an example. Although China Wildlife Protection Law was revised in 2016, it is still common in some areas to consume some wild animals for the sake of so called health or medicinal value. Let alone eating the alien invasive species without obeying any laws/regulations. There is a lack of thinking about sustainability and the well-being of future generations.

The coming 1, August marks the earth overshoot day of 2018. CBCGDF is really worried if this irresponsible consumption continues like this.
