On the afternoon of June 12, 2023, Mr. Chong Zhou, a volunteer from the Lianyungang Conservation Area of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), came across a nearly three-meter-long king ratsnake (Elaphe carinata ) while patrolling near the Danglu Reservoir in city.

The king ratsnake was crawling with a full stomach, and it looked like it did not want to leave. Mr. Zhou was worried that it may encounter accidents or would scare passers-by, so he caught it with snake-catching tools and released it back to the jungle.

Elaphe carinata is a large snake with total length up to 240 cm, and it is an active, predatory snake that eats everything from beetles to birds to snakes, with particular preference for the latter。

Elaphe carinata is hardy and adaptable, mainly living in mountains, plains and hilly areas, and active in rivers, ponds, reservoir areas and other places near water.

Snakes and reptiles like to live and inhabit in shady places such as tree shade, grass, streamside, etc., especially before rain, after rain and in the evening. If you encounter a snake, you should call the fire department for help in time. Do not catch or chase a snake to avoid unnecessary injury.
