What is Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON)?

As industrialization progresses, human activities continue to pose serious threats to the natural environment, putting the biodiversity at risk. Biodiversity is the key in maintaining the health of ecosystems, which in turn, is closely related to human survival and sustainable development. Therefore, Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) has become a key approach in the success of the Global Biodiversity Framework in the post-2020 era.

The idea of “Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON)” has been advanced by Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). The significance of BCON lies in reducing negative human impacts & promoting positive influences on the environment, protecting biodiversity through various measures in our daily lives and production processes, promoting harmony between human and nature. This not only helps maintain the balance and stability of the ecosystem, but also improves human quality of life and welfare.

There are various ways and forms of BCON. For example, different protection methods can be adopted in farmland, orchards, and industrial parks, such as allowing wild grass to grow, reducing the use of pesticides, providing habitats for birds, and promoting ecological agriculture in farmland. These measures not only protect the ecological environment but also improve the efficiency and quality of agricultural and industrial production.

Another important significance of BCON is achieving a win-win situation for both ecological and socio-economic benefits. By bridging the gap between protection and economic benefits, empowering local people with development rights, and protecting the ecological environment, sustainable development goals can be achieved. The example of "Hubei Lotus Farmers" reported by CBCGDF Media is a best practice case. See:

At the same time, BCON can also be achieved through innovative design and technological means. For example, in a three-story small hotel, a roof with an anti-seepage water storage system was designed to store rainwater. The surrounding plants and vines on the roof became a refuge for some small creatures, creating a mini biodiversity ecosystem. This innovative design not only beautifies the environment but also contributes to the protection of the local ecological environment.

In conclusion, Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood is an extremely important issue that concerns human survival and development. By adopting various measures to reduce damage and disturbance to nature, protect biodiversity, we can achieve a win-win situation for both ecological and socio-economic benefits. Moreover, BCON is something that everyone can contribute to, as long as we have a love and admiration for nature, it can be done effortlessly, or even "do nothing" as Taoism suggests - and there is no greater good than this.
