The conflict between birds and humans, and how to resolve it, has been a long-term research topic of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) in providing solutions. Following the first online training session of the State Grid’s “Green Grid Project - Line Protection Love Bird Action - Bird Migration Lifeline” public welfare project for the year 2023, the second online training session was successfully held on the morning of April 28, 2023. The event was jointly organized by the CBCGDF and the State Grid Public Welfare Foundation.

The training was mainly divided into three themes: the “bird-wire” harmonious coexistence strategy based on bird habits, analysis of wildlife protection laws, regulations and typical cases, and how to promote the “Bird Migration Lifeline” public welfare project. Employees of State Grid Corporation of China from nearly 20 provinces across China, as well as Line Protection Love Bird volunteers, participated in the training.

The “Bird Migration Lifeline” project is a key brand project of the State Grid Corporation of China to assist in ecological environmental protection and promote the harmonious coexistence of power grids and birds. It is also one of the public welfare projects under the “Green Grid Project - Line Protection Love Bird Action” series. Since its launch in 2021, the project has successively carried out habitat surveys, volunteer training, patrols, and rescue work for wild birds at 17 project sites along the bird migration route, including Zhalong Wetland in Heilongjiang, Tianjin, Cangzhou and Tangshan in Hebei, Dongying in Shandong, Chizhou in Anhui, Gaoyou in Jiangsu, Yancheng in Jiangsu, Poyang Lake in Jiangxi, Fanwan Lake in Hubei, Yangxian County in Shaanxi, Songxian County in Henan, Shahe Lake Wetland in Ningxia, Zhangye in Gansu, Aba Prefecture in Sichuan, Bazhou in Xinjiang, and Linzhou in Tibet.

According to statistics, as of the end of 2022, the “Bird Migration Lifeline” project has rescued more than 13,000 protected birds at all levels in China, set up one physical Line Protection Love Bird Innovation Workstation, two Oriental White Stork Conservation Areas (CCAfa), and promoted and participated in the formulation of one Oriental White Stork Conservation Area management method with local governments. In 2022, more than 350 Oriental White Storks were born on State Grid transmission lines.

The successful hosting of this training not only provided a platform for promoting domestic bird conservation, but also deepened the understanding of National Grid employees from various provinces on the background of the “Birds on the Power Lines” public welfare project, as well as knowledge about birds, ecology, and coexistence strategies. It also enhanced their understanding of relevant laws and regulations related to wildlife protection in China, and provided them with experience on how to effectively promote social influence and raise public awareness of biodiversity conservation through dissemination.

In the context of global climate change and rapid social and economic development, promoting harmonious coexistence between power grids and birds will be an important task for power grid companies in the future. It is believed that with the joint efforts of National Grid units and project organizers, the “Birds on the Power Lines” project will be able to effectively alleviate bird-line conflicts, promote dual protection of birds and lines, achieve harmonious coexistence between humans and birds, and contribute to the construction of China’s ecological civilization.

CBCGDF is the first Chinese social organization partner of the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) in China, and also an observer to the CMS Energy Taskforce. Promoting harmonious coexistence between humans and birds is an important area of work for the organization. With the advocacy and promotion by CBCGDF, more and more energy companies in China have begun to pay attention to Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhoods (BCON).
