On April 27, 2023, the“Clean Internet for Conophytum”received feedback from volunteers:
Regarding the wild Conophytum bilobum plant, merchants posted on the Xianyu platform that they purchased Conophytum bilobum from the place of origin. Many volunteers reported to the platform many times, but Xianyu ruled that the reports were not valid.
Procurement of wild Conophytum violates the provisions of CITES, and leads to the trade of wild Conophytum, causing huge damage to the local environment and devastating damage to some Conophytum populations.
This has been rejected by the Xianyu platform many times.
Prior to this, the Legal Work Committee of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) had sent a letter to Zhejiang Alibaba Xianyu Network Technology Co., Ltd. It is hoped that sellers will remove the sale and promotion of wild Conophytum as soon as possible, so as to reduce the risk of wild Conophytum being illegally harvested due to commercial interests, and fulfill the social responsibility of protecting biodiversity. However, no feedback has been received from the Xianyu platform so far.
【About Clean Internet for Conophytum】
Clean Internet for Conophytum is a nature protection initiative initiated by the Botanical Garden Working Committee of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, which aims to combat illegal wildlife trade activities by monitoring illegal wild plant transactions on online trading platforms. Special attention is paid to cross-border poaching and illegal Conophytum trade, aiming to protect biodiversity and jointly build a community of life on earth. The action was launched on March 9, 2023, and has received support and participation from the public, nature conservationists, horticulturalists, and businesses, and has continued to receive feedback on cases and clues.
If you have any clue of illegal wild Conophytum transactions and hope to contribute to the community of life on earth, please contact us. In addition, you can also search for "wild Conophytum", "origin Conophytum" and other keywords on the e-commerce platform. If you find any clues of suspected illegal trade, you can report to the platform; you are also welcome to share whether the platform accepts it. Contact: v43@cbcgdf.org
