Since April 17, 2023, Sri Lanka’s proposed export of 100,000 Toque Macaques has become a hot topic. A larger debate is taking place. It has caused concern among some conservationists and zoologists, but local farmers have been given the green-light.

Currently available information shows that it is suspected to be the purchase behavior of private enterprises. The Sri Lankan government has confirmed a request from a private Chinese company to export 100,000 endangered monkeys.

It is reported that the almost all live animal exports from Sri Lanka are banned, but the proposal is being considered when Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis.

Are they really a pest to local farmers? Are their numbers really reach a high of 2~3 million which troubled local farmers a lot? Would the company really buy 100,000 Toque Macaques? Biology and Science Ethics of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF BASE) calls for disclosing its fact.
