I am glad to hear that the Intermediate People’s Court of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province accepted the environmental public interest litigation filed by China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) for the protection of wild Conophytum plants.

In the current grim situation of global biodiversity loss, protecting endangered species has become the common responsibility of the whole society. The environmental public interest litigation brought by CBCGDF provides us with a new angle to pay attention to and solve this problem.

This lawsuit is filed against a company and its legal representative which has been engaged in the collection, sale and trading of wild Conophytum plants for a long time. They illegally collect and trade Conophytum plants, which are popular because of their rarity and unique appearance, but driven by interests, they have become targets of criminals. In this case, CBCGDF filed a lawsuit to protect Conophytum, calling on all sectors of society to act together to jointly protect the global biodiversity and ecological environment.

In my opinion, the acceptance of this case proves that China’s legal system has become more and more mature in environmental protection. China’s Environmental Protection Law gives social organizations the right to safeguard environmental public interests, which is also a positive measure for ecological civilization construction in China. In addition, in terms of environmental governance, the bottom-up management model can better play the role of social organizations, and at the same time allows more people to participate in environmental protection.

Although this lawsuit still has a long way to go, it has sent an important signal to the whole society: protecting endangered species and biodiversity has become a global responsibility, and everyone needs to make their own efforts. In the future environmental governance, we need more of such cases to protect the environment and biodiversity by legal means, so that more people can understand the importance of biodiversity and take action for it.
