On April 2, 2023, two months after the Conophytum species were listed in Appendix III of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), bad news were sent from volunteers to the initiative of Clean Internet for Conophytum that unlawful merchants are still selling wild Conophytum plants poached from their original habitat. According to a volunteer who reported to China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), there are still sellers trading wild Conophytum achabense on popular social media WeChat Moments.

“It is said to be transported through Thailand and entered China through Kunming,” the volunteer reported.

CBCGDF was shocked and called on Customs to take strict actions. Clean Internet for Conophytum is an initiative for natural conservation launched by CBCGDF to combat illegal wildlife trading activities, particularly cross-border poaching and illegal trading of succulent plants, by eliminating illegal online transactions of wildlife. The aim is to conserve biodiversity and build a community of life on earth. The initiative was launched on March 9, 2023, and has received support and participation from the public, conservationists, horticulturists and businesses.
