Safe Harbor for Mermaids: Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin Sent Back to Ocean after Successful Rescue

On March 1, Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association held the ceremony to send an Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin back to ocean at Haihua Island, Danzhou City, Hainan Province.


On April 7, 2022, the dolphin was found stranded on Qizi Bay, Changjiang County, Hainan Province. Related official departments, organizations, rescue teams and warm-hearted citizens carried out emergency rescue and transferred it to Marine Biological Research Base in Danzhou. After 11 months of medical treatment and care, the physical condition of the dolphin has completely recovered. After evaluation by the expert, the dolphin was sent back home.

Safe Harbor for Mermaids Project was jointly initiated by China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and Blue Ribbon Marine Conservation Association (BROCS), which has abundant experience in the rescue of marine animals, in 2016. The project was designed to spread knowledge to the public about cetaceans such as Chinese white dolphin, increase residents’ awareness of cetaceans protection in Hainan, rescue stranded cetaceans and popularize rescue knowledge, and encourage more people to participate in the protection of cetaceans.
