On the night of August 9, 2022, CBCGDF Dugong Group held a meeting and made a very comprehensive plan for the work strategy in the next three years, covering the following aspects:

1. To study the dugong habitat and the current situation of the Guangxi Beibu Gulf Dugong Reserve, and strive to rewild the dugong reserve and restore its ecology.

2. To make a thorough investigation about all the dugong reserves and dugong migration routes.

3. To suggest to the relevant countries and departments to "re-route", so that human activities such as shipping and fishing can bypass the dugong area and its migration route as much as possible, and minimize the human interference with the dugong. In this regard, we can draw on the experience of South America in successfully rerouting (diversion) to address ocean pollution.

4. To work with the international community to guide the re-introduction of species.

Dugong, also known as "mermaid", is a national-level protected animal in China, which used to be mainly distributed in the southern coast of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Taiwan, but is now basically extinct in the southern coast of China. Dugongs and Asian elephants share a common ancestor, having entered the sea more than 25 million years ago. The dugong in the Guangxi Beibu Gulf is a flagship species in wetland biodiversity conservation, and its conservation will affect the survival of other organisms in the entire wetland ecosystem. In light of CBCGDF's experience with the reintroduction of Pere David's Deer, CBCGDF has set up the Dugong Group with the aim of promoting the reintroduction of this valuable marine species and the ecological restoration of the entire ecosystem on which it depends.
