On August 2, the scientific expedition team of China Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development (CBCGDF) successfully completed the 2022 (phase 3) comprehensive scientific expedition to Lop Nur and its surrounding areas, which provided valuable basic information to explore the evolution of ecological and hydrological processes in Lop Nor and its surrounding areas under warm and humid climate and the evolution’s impact on regional biodiversity.

During the scientific expedition, the team consisting of experts from the integrated hydrology group, plant group and geological environment group carried out field scientific research starting from Korla in Xinjiang, and through the areas of Luntai, Desert Highway, Tazhong Town, Minfeng County, Qiemo County, Ruoqiang County and Luojia Town.

The scientific expedition team carried drones, portable flow meters, water quality testing pens, groundwater samplers, small handheld soil sampling rigs, electronic scales, and sampling vessels to collect surface water and groundwater samples from the Tarim River, the estuary reach of Niya River, the Aksu Kul Lake, the Andir River, the Yeyiq River, the Tunguska River, the Five Reed Farm, the Qarqan River, the Lop Nur hinterland, and the potash field, and to conduct a sample survey of the plant communities along the research route.

The lake, river and groundwater samples will be used to explore the evolution of regional water resources under the influence of warm and humid climate, human water extraction and ecological engineering. The plant community survey will be used to analyze the background of regional vegetation distribution and the response mechanism to regional climate and hydrological processes.
