Mr. Hong Bo from Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) recently sent us good news: in Donggang Lake, Chibi, Hubei, from November 15, 2021 to March 14, 2022, the stable number of wintering Siberian Cranes was 33.
Among the 33 Siberian Cranes, there are 6 youngsters (little yellow cranes). Youngsters make up 18 percent of the crane population that winters here, revealing a healthy population structure.
Donggang Lake, Yujiaqiao Township, Chibi City, Hubei Province, is an important habitat for migratory birds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF). For a long time, local conservationists and bird lovers have invested a lot of efforts in safeguarding those migratory birds, which has effectively promoted the protection of local biodiversity.
Hubei, rich in wetlands, is a place where RAMSAR COP14 will be held later this year. This great story of the Siberian Cranes will also be published on Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) for open access to the global research community.
