Attention! CBCGDF Urgently Calls on Joint Efforts for “Ecological Restoration” of Shanghai Nanhui Dongtan Wetlands for the Sake of Birds & Nature

Shanghai Nanhui Dongtan Wetland filled with reeds and rich in biodiversity, is a perfect local habitat for lots of migratory birds like geese and ducks, and shorebirds (plovers and sandpipers) along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF).

On September 1, 2021, Shanghai Lingang Special Area Management Committee released the construction plan of Nanhuizui Ecological Park - Chifengang Wetland Center, promising to “strengthen biodiversity conservation and wetland restoration based on the construction of Nanhuizui Ecological Park” and “to preserve the current reeds, with the ecological enhancement area about 84 hectares, connecting through the water system and creating multiple types of wetland habitats”. While now the reeds ranging from Shanghai Nanhuizui Park to Nangang Road Area are being bulldozed in an amazingly fast way, making the birds inhabited here all fled in fear!

In fact, the ecological problems of Nanhui Dongtan Wetlands and the misconceptions of managers have been reported for a long time. According to the report, the seventh ecological environmental protection inspector group of the central government, together with National Forestry and Grassland Administration, carried out inspection from August 31 to September 30, 2020 and officially offered the feedback on February 1, 2021.

National Forestry and Grassland Administration led the whole improvement program, requesting it to be restored ecologically by the end of Dec. 2022, in which it pointed out that Nanhui Dongtan is the largest natural wetland in Shanghai, an important habitat for the globally endangered species and endemic rare Chinese bird species, Reed Parrotbill (Paradoxornis heudei), whose ecological function has been seriously damaged since 2017 when the local started to plant fir trees, with an area of 3,500 mu, by replacing the natural reeds due to its exclusion from IUCN Red List.

In the meanwhile, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) urgently called for joint efforts from various national administrations including National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and Ministry of Natural Resources, together with Shanghai relevant departments, to work out a scientific program to make for the ecological protection and restoration of Nanhui Dongtan Wetlands.

Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of CBCGDF, believes that “ecological restoration” focuses on restoring ecosystem functions by using the self-organizing and self-regulating ability of the ecosystem itself, supplemented by human intervention. Usually, the damaged ecosystem can be gradually restored to a reasonable structure and complete ecological function in a long period of time, and the final ecological effect is relatively stable in the long term.

While “Ecological repair” is to adopt various physical methods, chemical methods, and ecological technical measures based on 3 Axioms of Pollution Control: non-proliferation, non-hazardous, and full publicity, in line with 4 Principles of Ecological Restoration: Resource-saving principle (Economy), Nature-based principle, Moderate principle and Holistic principle, combined with its ecological restoration capabilities to maximize repair of damaged ecosystems. “Ecological repair” focuses more on human intervention and the implementation process, and the final results are relatively short-term/dynamic ecological effects.
