It is High Time Tianjin Carry Out the Eco-Compensation Policy to Relieve the Conflict between Fishpond Owners and Migratory Birds| CBCGDF Volunteers

On November 4, CBCGDF volunteers, together with Tianjin local officials in multiple departments, did a field investigation in Ningchegu Fishpond Area in Tianjin.

Previously, when our volunteers were on patrol, they found that owners of the local fishponds tried to use firecrackers to scare birds away.

It is understood that Tianjin is an important stop for migratory birds on their way south, especially for the Oriental White Stork, the national first-class protected wild animal. Every year these migratory birds stay here for a while to replenish food and roost and then continue to migrate south.

Although Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and related departments of Tianjin Binhai New Area had set up a couple of measures about patrolling enhancement, education for locals, and environmental health, they haven’t taken measures in terms of ecological compensation.
It is known that as long as the way of eco-compensation is kept ignored, migratory birds will still be at risk of firecrackers, and direct or indirect poison from the locals.

Therefore, our volunteers really hope the government, and Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and related departments of Tianjin Binhai New Area could to some extent protect the habitat for migratory birds, and in the meanwhile, they also express their willingness and determination to help the government together safeguard migratory birds foraging and inhabiting the area, thus aiding them in migrating south.
