Zhou Haixiang: The Strayed Tiger SHould be Released Immediately

On April 23rd, a wild Siberian tiger strayed into a village in Heilingjiang Province, reportedly running down a villager and smashing a car while moving.

1. Why is it wild?

According to analysis on tige parks in Russia’s coastal regions and China, the greatest differences between a wild tiger and a domesticated tiger lies in that the wild one, with highly sensitive to human noises and breath, is terrified of humans, which makes it avoid humans as much as possible and regard human beings as natural enemies, let alone attacking humans, whereas the domesticated one has lost its vigilance and is used to finding food in human shelters, which makes it the genuine king of every living beings. And this is why the domesticated tigers are difficult to wild-release into the wild pacts.

The published videos showed that the tiger straying into the village and later named after “Wandashan No. 1” (Wandashan is the name of a mountain, a part of Changbai Mountain in Heilongjiang Province), was afraid of humans since it had been spotted and trying to hide itself. The running down of a villager was the extreme stress response in the context of human besieging, which prompted its escaping rather than active attack and still less biting or eating people.

2. Where did it from?

It was initially thought that the tiger was from the eastern part of Xingkai Lake in the Russian side (the lake is located along the China-Russia borderline) or that it was from Wandashan Mountain. But the author holds that it came from the western part of Xingkai Lake by a narrow lane (see the picture below).

3. Does its appearance prove good environment?

Media reports had it that the press conference held by the Heilongjiang Province said the tiger appeared in Mishan City fully proved the betterment of ecological environment and habitats.

The author sees no link between them. If there is some so-called links, its appearance demonstrates this place is not suitable for their living and reproduction.

It appeared probably because if had chased after its preys through barded wires.

After it crossed the wires, what followed were food shortage, and villages, humans, and cars that were scary for it. What is more, the path where it could return to Wandashan Mountain was blocked, so, the place is not a good habitat for it.

The greatest problem facing Siberian tigers is the food shortage and the reproduction of wild population. The author hopes that the public will face the reality, stop tricking others and themselves with lies, and solve environmental problems in good faith.

4. What awaits the tiger?

Currently, the tiger has been transferred to a breeding center for felines for quarantine and observation. Photos of the previous showed the Siberian tiger has chronical disease in its left eye (or because of the light reflection), and that the right eye had blood congestion which might be caused by smashing the car. It might be blind without immediate treatment.

Even without eye injuries, during the quarantine, the key to future wild-releasing is to make sure the tiger will not see a single human; otherwise, if the tiger is used to human presence, then the opportunity for wild-releasing is gone. The longer the human feeding, the lower the possibility of wild-releasing.

And where should be the wild-release site? The author thinks the optimal place should be Laoye Ridge in the western part of Xingkai Lake in Russia; after all it is its home. Considering the difficulty in cross-border wild-release, regions near the Laoye Mountain in China’s side is also advisable. But food supply and other living situations should be taken into consideration.

This article does not deny the efforts made by various localities in the protection of Siberian tigers in recent years. The Siberian Tiger and Leopard National Park is named after the flagship species to be protected, and is a cross-provincial protection project under the direct management of the Central Government. Because it is different from the traditional protected area, it solves the problem of a single system or territorial management area competing with each other, forming the macro-control of the entire regional ecosystem and providing more timely information, coupled with the comprehensive forest protection ban implemented in recent years. It should be said that the future protection of Siberian tigers and leopards will be the most historically important. The next step is to solve the shortcomings of the division of local systems, better the macro-ecological restoration management, open up the corridors of the various divisions of the entire national park, implement the policies and regulations, and do not rush for quick success and short gains. Under the premise of protection, let the animals enjoy a continuously improving living condition.
