It is well acknowledged that wetland is one of the most productive ecological systems which has diverse biodiversity resources as well as strong ecological functions such as maintaining regional hydrologic balance and conserving biodiversity. Wetland serves as the habitat for birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects, etc. It also provides a venue for scientific research, entertainment, education, and aesthetic appreciation. However, the past years have witnessed the shrinking wetlands and the loss of its ecological system due to unreasonable exploitation and utilization. In this context, a comprehensive assessment of several key factors including wetland transformation and biodiversity would contribute to wetland conservation and restoration, laying a foundation for the construction of Ecological Civilization and green development.

On May 12, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) presided over the meeting over threats to ecology and biodiversity. Typical cases are in wetlands at Baiyangdian (Hebei Province), Caofeidian (Tangshan City), Haixing (Canzhou City), Binhai New District (Tianjin City), etc. A working group of wetland investigation and restoration was organized at the meeting. The working group selected four typical wetland cases and will carry out biodiversity investigation and assessment, and the outcomes will contribute to ecological restoration and conservation. Dr. Zhou emphasized that the background value investigation of the biodiversity situation of the wetland is the foundation for restoration, with the support of reliable data, detailed documents, and referral cases. After the discussion, the working group selected the high-profile cases: Haixing Wetland and Provincial Birds Natural Reserve.

Located in the east of Haixing County, Hebei Province, Haixing Wetland covers an area of 29,330-hectare, accounting for 38 percent of the total area (77553.3 hectares). Because of the limited area of land and its saline-alkali soil Haixing Wetland has abundant plant resources. Halophytes like Nitraria tangutorum Bobr., reed, Suaeda glauca (Bunge) Bunge, Tamarix chinensis Lour. are distributed in the wetland. Plants like Chenopodium glaucum, Puccinellia distans, Imperata cylindrica, are mainly in the southern area of Yangchen Reservoir. Submerged plants can be found in the reservoir, fish and shrimp ponds.

Haixing Wetland has rich biodiversity resources. But a large area of the Wetland has been dried up over the last years due to uneven temporal distributions of precipitation and ineffective wetland protection work. Some regions have already been drained, undermining the ecological function. The problem to be solved lies in the negative influence on local biodiversity and future restoration plan. To explore the recovery of Haixing Wetland will actively promote the conservation of the local ecological system, and further provides a referral example for the recovery of destroyed wetlands nationwide.

The working group of wetland investigation and restoration of CBCGDF now invites environmental agencies, scholars, and experienced volunteers' engagement into the work.
