On February 26th, residents of the Bajiaowo community (Wanjiang street, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province) received a notice about killing the cage-free dogs. “It is strictly forbidden to keep dogs in captivity. If dogs are found to be kept in captivity, they will be killed,” the notice said. In order to encourage the community residents to actively participate in the operations, the notice also set up a reward mechanism. If the dogs are killed, the reward will be 200 - 300 yuan. According to the notice, this regulation will take effect on March 5th. Once this notice was sent out, it aroused a great response from netizens. Many netizens raised their objections on the Internet and listed the reporting channels.

On March 1st, the staff of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) contacted this community through the relative channel. The community staff said that, recently, due to the urination of cage-free dogs, the noisy barking, and the lack of management, caused a lot of inconvenience for the residents, as well as a lot of complaints. Therefore, the community decided to put forward this notice. However, due to the huge response on the Internet, the community realized the inadequacy of the practice and withdrew the announcement after receiving the complaint. The community is currently discussing new solutions. Dr. Sara Platto, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF’s BASE Committee and the chief scientist of CBCGDF’s wildlife rescue expert group, said that she hoped to give some expert advice to the community, but yesterday the community declined the help of CBCGDF.

On March 4th, when CBCGDF’s staff contacted the community again, the community said they had already publicly apologized for the incident on the Internet. They recognized the previous mistakes and said they will improve their work in the future.
