China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) learned that there are soil and groundwater pollution problems in Suzhou Green Bank Project (the former Suzhou Steel Plant) through the Central Ecological & Environmental Protection Supervision Report. According to the report, there are different degrees of soil and groundwater pollution in a number of plots in the area. Excessive pollutants include arsenic, lead, benzene, mercury and other heavy metal pollutants are detected in the plots, and long-term exposure will lead to heavy metal poisoning.

How did this area go through examination? How could it be assessed as “basically unpolluted and ready to be reused”? And how did the function of this area change? On March 8, 2023, we submitted a request for information disclosure to Suzhou High-tech District Government and Suzhou Natural Resources Bureau, for relevant documents about Suzhou Steel Group Co., Ltd.

CBCGDF attached great importance to this incident and will continue to follow up the progress of this incident and make it public in a timely manner.
