COP 15, A ONCE-IN-A-DECADE CHANCE TO ENSURE A NATURE-POSITIVE WORLD
2022/12/29 11:47:00 本站

In December 2022, 196 countries convened at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBDCOP15 )'s to agree on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

The Framework is a global strategy to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 in support of climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a crucial document promoted as the "Paris agreement" for climate, but in this case for nature, in which countries pledged to undertake measures to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels.

The global deal to reverse nature loss by 2030

The historic pledge to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 was made at the COP15 biodiversity summit in Montreal, Canada, on December 19th, 2022.

The Kunming-Montreal Agreement commits 196 governments who have signed it to conserving at least 30% of the world's land, freshwater, and ocean while respecting Indigenous peoples and local communities' rights and recognizing Indigenous and traditional territories' contributions to meeting this new target.

The participating governments have also agreed to eliminate environmentally harmful subsidies and increase financial support for conservation projects by 2030, mobilizing at least $US200 billion annually.

This is a significant victory for people and the planet and sends a strong signal to society to take action.

However, if essential parts of the agreement are addressed in national plans and programs, adequate language in critical areas may maintain its ambition.

There is also some concern that there are no mechanisms to hold governments responsible if targets are not met.

In summary, what we need is the following:

· A nature-positive world by 2030

· Targets to conserve at least 30% of land, freshwater, and oceans and restore degraded ecosystems globally by 2030

· Transformative action across the key productive sectors to tackle the drivers of biodiversity loss

· A strong and effective implementation mechanism

· Comprehensive financing aligned with nature-positive outcomes

· Nature-based solutions

· Rights-based approach

Finally, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), the Andean Road Countries for Science and Technology (ARCST), with the collaboration of UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL), UCEVA, Universidad Privada del Valle, the Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture (JLASC), and the South-South Biodiversity Science Project (SSBSP) are paving the way of a nature-positive world promoting the Quantum Leap to the Green Actions2 (QLGA), a tool to to engage the public in a broader sustainability mission, which offers an opportunity to impact society in general and fosters commitment to action to biodiversity conservation and green development.3-17
