Recently, the Eco-Civilization Site of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF)actively responded to the call of the 20th National Congress of the CPC which openly solicits opinions from the whole society,  and offered suggestions that we expect strong support for second-hand bookstores,  recycling and reusing books. The following is the full text:

We should strongly support second-hand bookstores such as "Laoliu second-hand bookstore" in Changsha, Hunan Province, and promote the recycling and reusing of books. It is not only conducive to building a cultural power, but also contribute to constructing ecological civilization and promoting the realization of the dual carbon goal.

Books are the carriers of knowledge and human civilization. A good book can benefit many people. It would be a huge waste if it was discarded only read by one person or a few people. Recycling and reusing books help protect the environment and promote social justice. Actually, the carbon footprint of a book’s entire life circle is relatively high. For our country’s great goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, everyone should put themselves in the recycling.

Laoliu second-hand bookstore" in Changsha, Hunan Province, CBCGDF’s Eco-Civilization Site, has been established since 1988. From the initial purpose of supporting the family to today's sense of social responsibility, for 35 years, we have seen many people realize their dreams because of reading. Moreover, some migrant works cannot afford new books, so they come to our bookstore to read that many such low-income people benefit from this.

Ecological civilization is not far away and it is the goal that everyone should strive for. We hope that there will be more such “Eco-Civilization Site”  in our country, and each city should regard such second-hand bookstores as something that adds glory to their own cities. We suggest that cities introduce policies that support the establishment and operation of second-hand bookstores, promote and lead the recycling and reusing of used books.
