In ecological governance, it's important to promote synergies between biodiversity conservation, climate change, and wetlands conservation. Trees-planting shall follow the nature. If not carried out properly, it could result in ecological disasters. Over past years, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has stopped some bad trees-planting practices in China, like the trees-planting movement in Shanghai on its intertidal wetlands, etc; and the massive trees-planting of single species of Black Poplar (Populus nigra L.) around Dongting Lake, which caused heavy negative impact on the wetlands' ecological health.

As Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng proposed that ecological restoration shall follow four principles: (1) Resource-saving principle; (2) Nature-based principle; (3) Principle of moderation; (4) Holistic principle.

Now a new study "Trade-off between tree planting and wetland conservation in China" published on Nature Communications shows 160,000–190,000 km2 (25.3–25.6%) of historical tree planting over wetland grid cells has resulted in 1,300–1,500 km2 (0.3–0.4%) net wetland loss.
