A regular press conference by Ministry of Ecology and Environment was held on Dec-23. During the conference, when asked about the latest development on environment protection work, the host focused on the case about falsified environment evaluation reports on Dredging Engineering in Shenzhen, to discuss about the significant meaning of public participation in environment evaluation.

Public participation will definitely play an important role in the improvement of environment evaluation and the prevention of falsified evaluation reports. As for the relevant cases in Shenzhen, thanks to the report from the public as well as social organizations, illegal projects were finally banned, which manifests the importance and effectiveness of public contribution.

Review on this falsification:

Just as the public and environmental organizations found, some details in Shenzhen’s initiative were simply copied from Zhanjiang’s. CBCGDF just calculated that the term “Zhanjiang” appeared in Shenzhen’s report for 35 times.

Meanwhile, scientists found that neither the occupation of wild habitats, the losses of food resources, nor the light and noise pollution that would be made during the operation was invariably omitted in this government report. Therefore, excerpts believed that this was not a completed plan for Shenzhen government.

After the public’s report and inspections from regulators, the case on this falsification was successfully dealt by the ministry of ecology and environment. What is more, multiple sectors in Shenzhen that are implicated in these issues are fined at millions of Chinese yuan because of their misconducts.
