Beijing, July 8, 2011 (Guangming Daily 2011) (By Wu Litian, Gong Suyi and Xing Yuhao) - "Since the 1870s, the world has lost 40% of its animal species, 20% of its mangroves and 40% of its coral reefs. This disastrous process has occurred in tandem with the world’s glorious Industrial Revolution." Today, at a conference on the response from all walks of life to the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, Hu Deping, Chairman of CBCGDF (China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation), said, "Actions speak louder than words."

Li Ganjie, Vice Minister of Environmental Protection, revealed that China will soon set up a "National Committee for Biodiversity Conservation in China" to lead the related works. More than 300 representatives from government agencies, scientific research institutes, industrial and commercial enterprises and public welfare organizations advocated: calling on the state to speed up relevant legislation and increase financial investment; calling on scientific research institutions and enterprises to carry out research and development of applicable technologies and assume social responsibility; calling on every citizen to consciously resist the consumption and use of wild animals and plants that are explicitly protected by the state to protect biodiversity.
