Since the Japanese government officially decided on April 13 to discharge the wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant to the Pacific, the international community has paid wide attention, especially aroused strong doubts from all walks of life in our society. The CBCGDF Legal Work Committee paid close attention to this incident.

On July 12, the CBCGDF Legal Work Committee sent a letter to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this matter. Prior to this, the CBCGDF had organized a seminar on “Legal Response to the Discharge of Nuclear Wastewater in Japan” on April 27, inviting many universities, research institutes and practical departments from the fields of ocean, environment, law and nuclear safety. Many experts and scholars attended the meeting. After synthesizing the opinions from experts and scholars, the CBCGDF Legal Work Committee put forward the following four suggestions to the three departments:

1. Request the Japanese government to immediately stop and revoke the wrong decision, which discharges wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

2. Require Japan to disclose all the information on nuclear wastewater and keep reporting and sharing information about the progress of nuclear wastewater disposal.

3. Request the United Nations to establish an investigation team and let China be an important member.

4. Guide and support indigenous social organizations to actively participate in the response.

The CBCGDF Legal Work Committee will continue to pay attention to the follow-up progress and is willing to fully support and cooperate with national ministries and commissions to safeguard our national interests!
