It's not the first time common speed train has been hit with a lawsuit over the smoking area.

Back in 2017, a prospective college student named Xiao Li took the common speed train on his way to register for college, took a passenger's smoking problem to court, and the court eventually ordered the railway authorities in Harbin to remove the smoking area in the train carriage.

In June 2021, the public interest lawsuit of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) against China Railway and other companies on "smoke-free trains" was concluded. According to the mediation agreement, smoking areas and smoking devices on the trains involving the three defendants -- Beijing Railway Administration, China Railway Lanzhou Group and China Railway -- will be completely removed.

We once again urge the China Railway and all relevant railway administrations to earnestly implement the basic requirements of the strategy of building an ecological civilization and building a healthy China, provide a good travelling environment for passengers and protect their legitimate rights and interests.

CBCGDF will continue to promote the "smoke-free train", hoping that all sectors of society to promote China's tobacco control work, to protect the health of the people.
