Fuzhou Customs Uncovered a Major Case of Smuggling of Endangered Wild Animals

In the early morning of July 24, 2020, under the unified command of the Anti-smuggling Bureau of the General Administration of Customs and the organization and coordination of the Anti-smuggling Bureau of the Guangdong Branch, with the support and cooperation of Fujian local public security and other relevant departments, the Fuzhou Customs Anti-smuggling Bureau, together with the Nanjing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Nanning Customs Anti-smuggling Bureaus, carried out the "Block-04" network seizing operation on the smuggling of endangered wild animals project. The Fuzhou Customs Anti-Smuggling Bureau arrested persons involved in the case of smuggling endangered wild animals in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province.

 

During the operation, a total of seven criminal suspects were arrested, all the established targets were arrested and brought to justice. Two gangs smuggling endangred wild animals were successfully eliminated. Six Great Hornbills smuggled into the country were seized on the modified transport vehicle.

 

Endangered wild animals of unknown origin, including 17 Hornbills, as well as hundreds of caracal, parrot, pelican, monkey, and raccoon, were seized at the farm. The documents involved in the case and a batch of electronic evidence were obtained.

 

Preliminary investigations indicate that since 2019, Yang’s gang in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, through Liu’s gang in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, Zheng’s gang and Liang’s gang in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, has ordered Great Hornbills, Rhinoceros Hornbills and other endangered wild animals from abroad, after handed over to a Lu gang in Fangchenggang, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, after smuggling into the country through a non-customs clearance area, they were transported to Fuzhou in modified private vehicles and sold domestically for profit. Preliminary investigation revealed that Yang gang was suspected of smuggling 22 endangered wild animals such as hornbills this year.

 

Currently, the case is under further investigation.
