Author’s note

The middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River are about to enter the rainy season. At the end of May, researchers from the Aerospace Information Research Institute Chinese Academy of Sciences found that the water level of Poyang Lake had reached 18 meters recently, approaching the flood warning line of 19 meters.

The rainy season usually lasts for more than two weeks. The upcoming precipitation and the impact it will bring to Poyang Lake remains unclear. Researchers are keeping a close eye on the lake’s water level.

In recent years, it is worrying that Poyang Lake is dry in winter while having excess water in summer. Rising water level poses a high flood risk in summer.
