On July 4, 2023, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received the civil judgment from the Second Intermediate People's Court of Hainan Province in Case No. (2022) Qiong 97 Min Chu 5. This environmental public interest lawsuit was filed against the illegal logging of the nationally protected plant Cyatheaceae.
Cyatheaceae, commonly known as tree ferns, is among the second-level protected plant species in China and is considered the "king of ferns," often referred to as "living fossils." They hold significant ecological, economic, scientific, and aesthetic value. Due to geological and climate changes, coupled with extensive forest destruction, the natural habitats essential for the survival of Cyatheaceae have become increasingly harsh, pushing them to the brink of extinction. Consequently, all species of the Cyatheaceae family have been listed in the Red List by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), indicating the risk of their extinction.

Plants cannot speak, yet their existence is an integral part of the public interest in the environment. To voice for the voiceless, CBCGDF has been striving tirelessly. This case represents one of the long-standing efforts of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation in protecting biodiversity.
