In order to carry out ecological civilization, implement the concept of green development, and respond to the proposal of the Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) that "accelerate the establishment of legal system and policy guidance for green production and consumption; establish and improve the economic system of green low-carbon cycle development; advocate a simple, moderate and green low-carbon lifestyle; oppose extravagant waste and unreasonable consumption; and carry out the establishment of conservation-oriented organs, green families, green schools, green communities and green travel, etc.". In early 2019, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) formally compiled the "Evaluation Standard for Green School (ESGS)" to promote the sustainable development of the green school.

On August 15th, the CBCGDF officially issued the “Evaluation Standard for Green School (ESGS)”.

“Green School" refers to saving resources (saving water, energy, material, and land), reducing pollution, increasing biodiversity at school, using as many natural-based solutions as possible to recycle resources, protect the environment and cope with climate change. Faculties and students together build a healthy, happy, close-to-nature and green low-carbon, simple, moderate, safe and efficient learning and living environment. "Green School" has the function of ecological civilization and environmental education for students, and it is the type of school that coexists harmoniously with the natural environment. There are two parts in the “Evaluation Standard for Green School (ESGS): “Primary and Secondary Schools” and “Colleges and Universities”. The CBCGDF now publicizes the group’s standards, and the publicity period is five working days.
