Case 9. Pesticide and Biodiversity Conservation

The main design idea of urban gardening has long been concentrated on the hidebound and dreary mode. The excessive use of pesticide and herbicide each year in cities leads to a dramatic plunge in urban biodiversity. The unreasonable management of urban parks is the principal cause of the biodiversity loss. As China’s urbanization advances, it is imperative to breathe new life into urban gardening.

CBCGDF advocates “let the wild grass grow”, namely leaving space in urban cities for wildflowers and weeds. Human activities should not interrupt the nature environment. “Let the wild grass grow” encourages to correct the misconception in urban gardening and boost biodiversity in cities. Nowadays, numerous enterprises in China has a misunderstanding in gardening, landscape, and lawn design: they spend much money on purchasing and maintaining introduced grass but discourage indigenous one because of looking messy and wild- this is the fallacy to industrial civilization. With the aim of biodiversity conservation and ecology security, the initiative tries to adjust the chase after irrational afforesting mode.

CBCGDF will stick to the promotion of “wilderness” and “let the wild grass grow”, calling on the wild scenery protection. CBCGDF will also make sure its work in harmony with natural laws. The wild grass, for instance, need no delicate cultivation, which is beneficial to the ecological environment. In the era of ecological civilization, the pursuit of letting weeds and wild flowers to grow contributes to biodiversity conservation.
