CBCGDF Constructs Species Discoverer “Little Guardian” (N Series)” Echoes GBIF. Do You Want to Join? | CCAfa

In December 1831, the second voyage of the Beagle lasted five years and opened its most important journey of species discovery in the history of the world. Because there was an important passenger on board, he was Charles Darwin, a naturalist.

Darwin was far from alone in having the eyes to explore and discover nature.

Recently, volunteers from the Chinese Conservation area at Tianjin, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), discovered another kind of dragonfly after the discovery of Libellula Angelina. By the way of inference, how many eyes should there be in the exploratory study tour? CBCGDF carried out those activities in CCAfas all over the country for adolescents to protecting biodiversity.

On the afternoon of September 2, Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of the CBCGDF, presided over an internal meeting on the work of the China Conservation Area (for something at somewhere, CCAfa), focusing on the recent discovery of new species in the China Conservation Area sites.

During the meeting, Secretary-General Zhou Jinfeng proposed that species discovery should be included as an important part of the current study tour in CCAfas and that children should be encouraged and advocated to explore local biological species on the premise of understanding the knowledge of biodiversity and species conservation in CCAfas. It can be uploaded to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) for children's exploration and discovery, after scientifically screening the species. CBCGDF truly share and protect global biodiversity information and make practical contributions.

"This is particularly meaningful for every teenager who participates in the study tour of CCAfa to have a deep understanding of the importance of biodiversity conservation and environmental protection, and it is a very practical popular science education," said Secretary-General Zhou Jinfeng, in order to encourage the species discovery of teenagers. CBCGDF can construct this exploration activity as a species discovery “little guardian (N series)”, such as the first species found and recorded in a CCAfa, known as N1; the first species found and recorded in all CCAfas throughout the country, known as N2; and nationwide, not just in China. The first species found and recorded in CCAfa is called N3, while the first new worldwide species found and recorded is called N4.

"The content of species can include wildlife, plants, microorganisms and so on. The reason why N series is named is that N is the first initial of the word “New”. Secretary-General Zhou Jinfeng believes that the exploration and discovery activities can be carried out directly with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) later on. Responding will bring a strong sense of honor and participation to Children, and cultivate their awareness of civic scientist and environmental protection from an early age. After all, biodiversity education should start from kids, which are the main force in building an ecological civilization and beautiful China's future. Montessori once said, "I saw, I forgot; I heard, I remembered; I did, I understood." She emphasized the importance of exploratory learning through active participation and hands-on practice.

Up to now, there are more than 120 CCAfas initiated and established by CBCGDF which protect a wide variety of unique species and habitats. As the most influential and largest biodiversity information database and service institution in the world, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) has more than 100 countries and institutions joined as members, and more than 460 million data (up to July 2014) are freely shared worldwide. In September 2013, after the formal accession of the Biodiversity Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to the GBIF, CBCGDF is the only environmental protection NGO authorized to upload information on species discovery directly after the scientific screening.

At present, the related work on the species discovery “little guardian (N series)” has been fully started. What are you waiting for when you love nature and like to explore? As long as you have a pair of eyes that are good at discovering nature, you can board your own Beagle anytime, anywhere, and begin your journey of discovery.
